North American Art Schools

Key Factors

1. Portfolio:

• The portfolio is the most important document demonstrating the student’s professional ability, creativity and imagination.

• Generally, schools require the submission of 10-20 works, and the number and content required differ for each school. It is necessary to plan ahead and select which school to apply for in order to ensure that all requirements can be met.

2. Academic Requirements:

• American universities generally focus on academic performance in grades 9 to 12 in high school.

• Canadian universities generally focus on academic performance in grades 10 to 12 in high school.

• Generally, art colleges require high school scores of C+ or above. Specific requirements differ for each school.

3. English Test:

• Students studying in high school in a country where English is not their native language must take language tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.

• A student studying in an English-speaking country for four years of high school may be exempted from English language tests.

• Most art colleges require a TOEFL  score of around 85, or a IELTS score of 6-6.5 or more. The specific requirements differ for each school.

4. Essay Writing:

• Applications need to fully demonstrate the professional ability and comprehensive strength of the individual.

• Essay writing seeks to reflect individual creativity, leadership and depth of thought.

5. Recommendation Letter:

• The recommendation letter is the only third-party evaluation of the student in the entire set of application documents, so it is particularly important.

• Recommendation from a reputable professional can greatly increase the chance of acceptance.
